2019 Summer & Fall Workshops

Here is my 2019 summer & fall workshop flyer redesigned by Tony Carlone. The map is still the same but most visitors will probably just use their gps or mapquest options to find us. Sometimes gps will say you are here when you are at the neighbors but just keep going till you see my sign. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call or e-mail me though.

4' x 6' Mould and Deckle made by Tony Carlone

Here are some images of the 4' x 6' modular mould and deckle, Tony Carlone made for the studio.

 Here, Tony is using the "floating mould" to create a marbled quality to the paper.

Now the piece is draining. Then it will be taken out in the sun to dry after the clamps and deckle have been removed.

The image above shows my first try with the new mould and deckle as a floating mould.

Here I am showing the mould and deckle before pulp has been added. Tony designed it in modules for easy storage.

Big Paper - May 2018

Here are some images from a private workshop for "Big Paper" in May 2018.

Participants in the workshop made paper in my new 4" x 6" mould and deckle (made by Tony Carlone.)

 Here the cloth from the pulp sprayed paper is removed after the paper is dry.

Introduction to Papermaking

July 7, 2017 (Fri.)

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this introductory workshop participants will learn the basics of pulp preparation and sheet forming utilizing simple tools which can be found or constructed in the home studio. Students will sample western methods of sheet-forming and make paper with one or more plant fibers. Techniques covered will include laminating, embedding, embossing and others. We will create sheets which may be used for a variety of projects.

Cost $75.00

Big Paper!

July 28-29, 2017 Fri. - Sat.)
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this workshop, participants will use a pulp sprayer to make large handmade paper sheets. Great for wall hangings, window shades and other large-scale work!

Cost $150.00

Super Thin Handmade Papers!

Sept. 16, 2017 (Sat.)
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

You will make translucent sheets of paper, by hand, from a wide variety of fibers, including those from indigenous plants, eastern plant fibers, and over beaten fibers. Western and eastern sheet-forming techniques will be utilized. 

This workshop is perfect for those of you who have made paper before and want to perfect your technique. This paper will be great for lamps, collages, chine collé on prints, drawings, etc.

Cost $75.00

Sculptural Handmade Paper Lamps

July 28 - 30, 2016 (Fri. - Sun.)
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Create translucent sculptural pieces with handmade paper! The process involves producing an armature with willow and cloth. Then layers of pulp made from eastern plant fibers (i.e. kozo or gampi) and indigenous plant fibers are applied to the cloth. When the pulp is dry, the cloth is removed, leaving a strong, translucent paper wedded to the willow support. 

Optional electrical units and lamp shade supplies will be available for purchase to use with your handmade paper sculpture.

Cost $225.00

Special Projects In Handmade Paper

By Appointment - 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.This is a special opportunity for students enrolled in any of the workshops to return to finish work or to use the Hollander beater to prepare pulp for yourself or your students. Cost is $75.00 per day.

Shibori Dyeing - June 24 - 25, 2017 (Sat. - Sun.)

Shibori is the Japanese art of creating beautiful designs and well de ned patterns by creasing, folding, stitching, twisting, tying and clamping paper and fabric during the dyeing process. The techniques are easy to learn and require no experience. Your personal choice of color and design will ensure highly individual results. Many shibori techniques derive from those used in indigo dyeing. In this workshop, some traditional methods have been adapted to use with a variety of natural dyes. All dyeing materials will be supplied in class, including a selection of natural fabrics and papers. Additional fabrics and papers will be available for purchase in class. Students may also bring an article of clothing they wish to upcycle with shibori dyeing! 

Cost: $100 (Note: There will be a charge for additional supplies also.)

Papermaking with Indigenous Fibers - August 5 - 6, 2017  (Sat. - Sun.) 

In this two-day workshop, participants will explore the qualities of indigenous plant bers, learning basic and unique techniques to transform plants into handmade paper while gaining a better understanding of the processes involved in creating a variety

of strong, beautiful plant papers. We will begin with an introduction and identi cation
of collected plants such as cattail, iris, pampas grass and sumac, learn about their preparation before becoming paper pulp. Using these bers in addition to naturally
dyed cotton and abaca, we will make a variety of handmade papers. Participants will form their own sheets and explore the possibilities of embedding materials such as dried owers and plants, thread, and seeds. Beginners and the experienced are both encouraged to participate. It will be an experimentation with texture, color, and of course smell. Engage your senses! 

Cost $150
